Tuesday, 11:58 a.m. My last call ran long, the next one starts in two minutes, and something from the conversation I just left is still sitting in my chest. So I do the smallest thing I know. I touch my heart, close my eyes, take a couple of deep breaths to get out of my head and into my body, and I say: guardian angel.

That is the whole doorway. Everything else on this page is detail.

If you came here needing the words right now, they are directly below, and you can take them with you. If you have a few more minutes, stay, because the prayer is the beginning of a relationship, and the relationship is where everything interesting happens.

## The prayer

This is the guardian angel prayer I actually pray, in my own words. You are welcome to use it word for word, or to change any word that doesn't sound like you. My guardian angel has never once graded my grammar.

> My dear beloved guardian angel, I greet you in the holy name of God.

\>

> Thank you for being in my life. I love you, and I'm so grateful that you are with me to help and guide me.

\>

> I seek your help in... *(name what you are carrying: the decision in front of you, or the conversation you dread)*

\>

> I humbly ask for your guidance. Please communicate in a way that I can hear it and know it. Please help me see, hear, feel, and know the wisdom that God intends for me to know.

\>

> Thank you, guardian angel. I love you. Amen.

One line in there does quiet, important work. "Please communicate in a way that I can hear it and know it" exists because guidance arrives differently for different people. Some people receive words, others pictures. And plenty receive a feeling that lands in the body before the mind can name it. Asking your guardian angel to speak in your language means the wisdom arrives the way it was intended, instead of in a form you keep missing.

## The prayer many of us learned first

For a lot of people, "guardian angel prayer" means the one they learned as a child:

> Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God's love commits me here: ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

That is the traditional Catholic prayer, and it has been prayed in something close to this form for centuries. The Church keeps it among its core prayers to this day ([USCCB](https://www.usccb.org/prayers?ref=liminalcatalyst.com), [Loyola Press](https://www.loyolapress.com/catholic-resources/prayer/traditional-catholic-prayers/prayers-every-catholic-should-know/prayer-to-my-guardian-angel/?ref=liminalcatalyst.com)), and the Catechism teaches that each believer has an angel as "protector and shepherd" from childhood to death (paragraph 336 of the [Catechism of the Catholic Church](https://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/%5FINDEX.HTM?ref=liminalcatalyst.com)).

I did not grow up Catholic, so I want to be honest about how I hold this. My belief is that we each have a personal relationship with God and the divine, and my practice grew out of that relationship. If the Angel of God prayer is the one your grandmother taught you and it feels right in your mouth, absolutely pray it. If you grew up with no tradition at all, you have lost nothing; there are many ways to connect. Neither prayer on this page outranks the other. Find your truth. Take what you like and leave the rest.

## Heart first, words second

Here is the thing I would want you to remember if you remember nothing else: it's much more important to communicate from your heart simply than to use the right words.

You could say the perfect words, and if you're in your head instead of your heart, the prayer lands with a fraction of its strength. Sincerity is the signal. So instead of memorizing, build. Every prayer I pray follows the same simple architecture, and you can use it to write one that is yours:

**Greet, in the name of your higher power.** God is my word. Yours might be Source, Great Spirit, or Creator. Opening in that name is a measure of sincerity and humility, a way of saying: I know where this connection lives.

**Give thanks before you ask.** Prayer is an exchange of energy. Before I ask for anything, I want to open my heart and connect from there rather than from my mind, so I start with what I'm grateful for. Gratitude is also honesty. You did not create all the opportunities around you alone; you were co-creating them with a force larger than you, and saying thank you keeps you from becoming someone who only ever takes.

**Ask for what you need.** Name the specific meeting or the specific person. Vague prayers get vague answers.

**Ask to receive in your language.** The see-hear-feel-know line above, or your own version of it.

**Close with reverence.** The same gratitude you opened with, and love. Reverence is a big one for me. It costs nothing and changes everything about how the prayer feels.

Then say it out loud and notice how it lands. If it feels strong and true, that is a yes; keep praying it. If it feels like someone else's words in your mouth, that is real information too. Change the words until they're yours.

## Where the prayer fits in a working week

The picture most people carry of prayer involves a quiet room and an hour nobody has. My practice looks different, and I built it inside a working calendar on purpose.

I keep two windows a week, Monday and Friday, for longer free-flowing sessions: journal open and questions ready, with no agenda beyond listening. That rhythm matters, the way a standing date with a friend matters. The relationship deepens in the dedicated time.

Almost everything else happens in the cracks of an ordinary day. Between calls, I touch my heart and breathe. I greet my guardian angel and ask one question. In meetings, when something feels off and I need a read, I'll turn my camera off and ask, or lower my eyes and soften my focus, and put my hand over my heart for a few seconds. Nobody on the call has ever noticed. The questions I bring are working questions: What's really going on here? Is this person to be trusted? What isn't the room saying? What needs to happen next?

I keep a journal next to my keyboard, and when something arrives, I write it down, even three words of it. Guidance has a way of feeling unforgettable in the moment and evaporating by lunch. The journal is how I take the relationship seriously.

None of this requires leaving your life. That is the entire point. The mortgage is due on the first and the calendar runs on a cadence, and the prayer fits inside both.

## How the answer arrives

Asking is half the relationship. Receiving is the other half, and it is the half nobody teaches.

When I ask a yes-or-no question, I almost always receive an answer. When nothing comes, I ask the same question the other way, open-ended: what do I need to know about this? Then I listen without forcing. What arrives might be a few words. It might be an image, or a knowing that settles in my chest with a weight an ordinary thought never has. When it comes, I say thank you, every time, and I go back to my day.

Sometimes I ask my guardian angel to come closer, so I can feel that the nearness is real. For me, the signal is physical and specific: a distinct sense of pressure in my ears, a shift in my hearing, as if the room has gone slightly muffled. Yours will be different, which is why the prayer asks for communication you can recognize. Pay attention to what happens in your body in the seconds after you ask. The signal is usually quieter than you expect and more consistent than you'd believe.

If you want to go deeper into how guidance arrives, and which of your senses does the receiving, that is the territory of [the clairs, the eight intuitive senses](https://www.liminalcatalyst.com/the-clairs/), and it pairs naturally with this practice. People who mostly hear their guidance will recognize themselves in clairaudience; people whose knowing arrives whole will find [claircognizance](https://www.liminalcatalyst.com/claircognizance/) familiar.

## A relationship, worked like any other

The biggest shift in my practice came when I stopped treating my guardian angel like a vending machine and started treating the connection like a relationship with someone I love. That means I address my guardian angel directly. I say thank you every single time guidance shows up, the way you'd give genuine appreciation to a person who kept showing up for you. I bring the real questions instead of the polite ones.

The traditions, for what it's worth, describe something built for exactly this kind of closeness. The Hebrew scriptures say God "will command his angels concerning you, to guard you in all your ways" ([Psalm 91:11](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm+91%3A11&version=NIV&ref=liminalcatalyst.com)). Jesus speaks of children whose "angels in heaven always see the face of my Father" ([Matthew 18:10](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+18%3A10&version=NIV&ref=liminalcatalyst.com)). Islam teaches that each person is accompanied by watching, recording angels, and versions of the guardian idea run through many traditions beyond these ([Britannica](https://www.britannica.com/topic/angel-religion?ref=liminalcatalyst.com), [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guardian%5Fangel?ref=liminalcatalyst.com)). The Catholic Church has kept a feast day for the Guardian Angels on October 2 since the 17th century ([Franciscan Media](https://www.franciscanmedia.org/saint-of-the-day/feast-of-the-guardian-angels/?ref=liminalcatalyst.com)), and in Gallup's polling, roughly 7 in 10 Americans still say they believe in angels ([Gallup, 2023](https://news.gallup.com/poll/508886/belief-five-spiritual-entities-edges-down-new-lows.aspx?ref=liminalcatalyst.com)). I offer all of that as tradition and record rather than proof. The proof that matters is the kind you collect yourself, one asked question at a time.

Start small. One greeting a day, one honest question a week, one thank you every time something arrives. Relationships are built out of small moves like these.

## Take the prayer with you

I made a printable card of this prayer, along with my workday protection prayer, each one formatted to live where your days happen: a desk drawer, or the inside cover of a notebook. Tell me where to send it and it arrives immediately. And I will tell you something I do that I have never seen another practitioner do: the moment you join, I bless you, as part of my own prayer practice. Every letter I send is blessed before it goes out. That is the exchange on my side of it.

## When what you carry wants more than a prayer

Most days, the prayer is enough. Sometimes it isn't. If you have been praying and asking and something heavy still will not lift, if you feel influenced by something that does not feel like you, that is the moment for experienced hands. In my healing practice I offer a Spiritual Clearing Session: hands-on, 60 minutes, customized to your energetic field, using the explicit practices of the lineage I trained in, including cord cutting and the removal of curses and witchcraft. It is held in person in Los Angeles, on Sundays. You are welcome whenever you are ready, and the prayer will hold you in the meantime.

May your guardian angel feel near tonight, and may you recognize the signal when it comes.
