- Description: AI can do almost all knowledge work well now. What it can't hold for you is your discernment, and on your most important work, what I've been shown is that the gap matters.

What's the "right" way for spiritual people to use AI?

I get some form of that question a lot. I run AI-native businesses and build with AI daily, and I still do some things the "old-fashioned way" where I know AI falls short.

The short answer to this question is *with intention and discernment*.

The longer answer starts with what AI is good at. AI can do almost all "knowledge work" fairly well now, and it's getting better and faster every day. I hand it the call summary and the spreadsheet cleanup happily. It's a tool for the work I can't do or have no need to do myself.

What stays with you is a different category of work entirely.

## The advantages you were born with

You were born with three distinct advantages that the world needs: your discernment, your imagination, and your unique gifts.

Discernment helps you understand what's really important. It helps you see things others don't see. In a leader, it's the part of you that knows a partnership is wrong while the numbers still look fine, or senses which of 12 priorities matters this quarter. For some of us it arrives as a knowing in the chest, the way I describe [claircognizance](https://www.liminalcatalyst.com/claircognizance/).

Imagination allows you to visualize new, better, or different possibilities. It's how a founder sees a company before it exists.

Your unique gifts allow you to do something useful with your imagination and discernment. For one leader, that's writing. For another, it's reading a room, or building a team people want to stay on.

That recipe is true of all of us, and your leadership likely draws on it already.

Don't delegate those advantages.

## What I've been shown

What I've been shown is that when we try to use AI in place of human discernment, imagination, and unique human gifts like writing or artistry, the result from the AI models is:

- 2 degrees off: "close enough" at first, but miles away as it keeps going
- 80% fidelity to the original vision
- 80% potency of the original strength

On a meeting summary, 80% is plenty. On your vision, the missing 20% is the part that sets you apart.

The 2 degrees are the harder part to catch, because the first version reads "good enough" and it starts out innocently. A common one I see is a founder asks a model to tighten the company's mission statement. The new sentence is smoother and "sounds good." The team adopts it, the website carries it, and new hires learn it. Months later, and thousands of conversations prompted from that AI-edited mission statement, and you start seeing sentences that feel foreign to the founder. When that happens, nobody can pinpoint when the drift began or how many documents were affected by it.

It's a dangerous tradeoff of efficiency to have an LLM stand in for the human voice at the center of a big mission.

## The one thing to keep yours

When it matters, in life or business, use your innate advantages. Delegate the busywork to AI.

And as a founder of a company, one thing to always keep yours is the vision and mission of your business.

AI can help you organize what you've written about your vision. It can help you find the typo in it. The vision itself, and the words that carry it to your team and your customers, come through you. When you've lost the thread of it, the fix is to go back to the source, which is you. (And, for me and the messengers among us, God.)

One of my healing clients was frustrated about the lack of progress in her business. After a personal and business healing, she woke up with a burst of clarity on everything she'd been avoiding. She looked at the numbers, made two staffing decisions she'd delayed for months, then took a weekend away to get clear on the vision and mission for her life and business. She says she's more fired up now than she has been in years. (Correlation does not imply causation, AND I don't believe in coincidences.)

## A practice for this week

Meditate on or pray about your vision, your mission, your unique gifts, and what you're here to do in this lifetime. Write down what you receive.

Here's how I'd set it up:

1. Find 20 minutes somewhere quiet. Take out a pen and notebook (no tech!).
2. Touch your heart, close your eyes, and take a couple of deep breaths to get out of your head and into your body.
3. Ask one question at a time. What is my vision? What is my mission? What are my unique gifts? What am I here to do in this lifetime? Give each one room before moving to the next.
4. Write what arrives, in your own words, even if it's three words or a single image. Try not to *think*; just write.
5. Later in the week, set your notebook next to the vision and mission statements your business uses today. Notice where they match, and where they sit 2 degrees apart.

If you find a gap, you've found your next piece of work, and it's yours to do.
